Alpha ETF Funds

The Alpha ETF Funds is the first ETF to be listed on the Athens Stock Exchange. This index fund attempts to mirror the performance of the FTSE Athex 20 index of the Athens Stock Exchange in Euros. This index is made up of the largest 20 blue chip companies that are listed on the Athex. This fund’s inception date was January 24, 2008. The official name of this fund is ALPHA ETF FTSE Athex 20 DOMESTIC EQUITIES FUND.

The management fee of this fund is 0.275% with the fund’s assets at 67,376,873.33 Euros on December 31, 2009. As of April 6, 2010, the value of the assets has dropped to 60.585 million Euros. The management group that handles this fund is Alpha Asset Management that rates this fund as 7 out of 10, with 10 being a high risk.

The assets of this fund are 99.4% in equities and 0.6% in cash. The top holdings as of the end of 2009 were the National Bank at 24.3%, Alpha Bank at 9.7%, Hellenic Telecom at 8.4%, OPAP at 8.1%, and EFG Eurobank at 7.0%. All 20 of the holdings in this ETF are from Greece.

The performance of this fund against the index was a return of 20.68%. The total number of shares outstanding with this fund is 5.956 million. The year to date performance is -12.03%.

The Greek economy is getting assistance from the European Union finally, but it might not be enough to stabilize the government from collapse. Striking workers is a common site in the streets of Greece and uncertainty is everywhere. ETF investing in the Alpha ETF Funds would not be advised until stability returns to the region.
