Best Africa ETFs

by Douglas on March 19, 2010

This list of the Best Africa ETFs was generated out of the never ending demand for new ways to invest. Like most investors, positive speculation that the world is on the path to recovery is what is fueling this desire. There is also the hope to make back the money that was lost when the financial institutions sent the world spiraling down just a few years back.

Investment in Africa has always been a desire for most, but hesitation exists because of all the political unrest. This may be changing. The IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn thinks there is a resurgence on the continent. The IMF has revised its economic growth estimate for the Dark Continent to 4.5% which is one of the best for any region in the world for 2010.

One of the most diverse of these funds is the PowerShares MENA Frontier Countries with a stock symbol of PMNA. The index it is based on is the NASDAQ OMX Middle East North Africa Index. Countries that have holdings in this fund are Egypt, Morocco, Oman, Lebanon, Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. The expense ratio for this fund is 0.95% with lasts year return of 5.06%.

The Market Vectors Africa Index ETF with a stock symbol of AFK has had a market return of 35.00% as of March 18, 2010. This fund attempts to mirror the Dow Jones Africa Titans 50 Index. Most of the companies this fund invests in have their headquarters in Africa and generate a majority of their company’s revenue from African sources. The expense ratio of this fund is at 0.83% and it is an emerging markets growth fund.

These are just two of the possible investments you can make in Africa. Just remember that even the IMF is wary of making an investment on this continent due to high unemployment and an unsecure standard of living that has lead to political unrest and violence.

When looking for ETF investing opportunities, the Best Africa ETFs is a very risky market because of the instability of the nations there.
