Is it time to buy Silver ETFs? The answer is yes if you wish to ride the continuing wave of positive returns during this economic turndown. Gold has again reached over $1500 an ounce which makes it unreachable for the small trader, but silver is still within reach.

For those thinking of ETF Investing in silver, the price per ounce closed at $35.070 an ounce on May 23, 2011. It has also continued to rise to $36.39 as May 24, 2011 comes close to an end. During this same time Gold has only raised $5 an ounce. By comparing the amount invested to the return, silver is the more profitable. Your investment in silver would only have to be less than $200 to match what those that have invested in gold are making for their $1500 investment.

The ETF that invests its assets in the spot silver price is IShares Silver Trust (SLV). The share price as of May 24, 2011 was at $35.77. The 52 week fluctuation has a range of $16.94 to $48.35. The average trading volume is at 31.7 million.

The YTD return of this investment is at 18.52%. The 1 year return is at 103.70%. The real question is not if it is time to buy silver ETFs but how much. Just be ready when the economy finally turns around and you should withdraw your funds or lose when the price drops.

The creation of the PIMCO Total Return ETF was announced at the end of last month. The ETF manager of this investment will be Bill Gross, the fund manager of the world’s largest mutual fund PTTRX Pimco Total Return Institutional Fund.

This is to be an actively traded and managed investment for ETF Investing by individuals. The date of it being available is not know. The paper work has been filed and now the approve is all that is being waited on. At this time there is not even a ticker symbol assigned to this ETF.

The manager of this fund has an outstanding record as head of the PTTRX fund. He has also received the award for Morningstar of being the Fixed Income Manager of the year for 1988, 2000 and 2007.

One of the leading differences of an ETF with mutual funds is that since it is traded daily, all of the disclosures are also done daily. This is so transparency of the investment is crystal clear.

As a track record goes the PTTRX YTD return is at 2.8%. The 3 year return is at 8.71 and 5 year return is at 8.81%. Each of these is respectable since they include the height of the recent recession without any major losses. The expense ratio of his fund is at 0.90% but the minimum investment is $1 million. That might place this investment out of reach of most investors. The ETF will be sold by shares, so it should be obtainable for most who wish to get in on this investment.

The PIMCO Total Return ETF is getting closer to reality, but at the moment is not an active ETF you can invest in.

The Japan ETFs took a hit after the devastation that physically hit this island nation just a few weeks ago. Investments in Japan were always thought to be safe, and they might again, but for now it is a large gamble.

The big worry is will the Japanese ETFs follow suit with the 80% loss TEPCO experienced since the natural disasters hit.

At this time there are 13 different ETFs invested in Japan in three different financial markets. Nearly every ETF in the Japanese market saw large increases in investment while the Japanese mutual funds saw dramatic losses.

This is common because of the nature of ETF Investing. These are investments that are easy to buy into and unload on a daily basis. The largest influx of money went to the iShares MSCI Japan Index Fund (EWJ) with over $1.8 billion new money in the two weeks following the disasters.

The daily average trading volume of EWJ is at 27.8 million but the last month has seen the price of this ETF fall in value by 10.51%. The reason for the losses is that all of the investment is in companies that are shut down.

The Japan ETFs are a good way to get in this lucrative market, but it has yet to bottom out. There are some bargain hunters out there jumping in, but it really is too early for most. The total loss of the devastation is still to be seen.

You might think it is a litter early for a 2011 ETF Review, but as with all things, demand from the market dictates what is supplied.

For those that are ETF Investing, the best performer so far this year is the Direxion Daily Energy Bull 3X (ERX). It has an YTD return of 48.09% as of March 28, 2011. For 2010 the total return was only 48.96% so it is already closing in on its performance of last year with only 3 months gone in this year.

The average trading volume of this ETF is 3 million. The current price is $85.68 with a 52 week high of $88.69 and a low of $22.18. The total expenses of this ETF are at 1.03%.

One of the best performers from last year is currently at number 2 for 2011. This is the iPath DJ-UBS Cotton TR Sub-index ETN (BAL). Its last year return was at 96.22% while this YTD is only 40.99% after three months.

The average trading volume of this ETN is 51k. The current price is $105.67 with a 52 week high of $117.33 and a low of $35.64. The total expenses of this ETN are at 0.75%.

The B2B Internet HOLDRs (BHH) is I third right now. It had a total return of 106.71% in 2010 and 95.61% in 2009 but in 2008 the return was -45.24%. Its YTD is at 25.81%.

The average trading volume of this ETF is 160k. The current price is $1.28 with a 52 week high of $1.31 and a low of $0.43. The total expenses of this ETF are not recorded. This is a penny ETF that could be a good investment. Best of all it does not take much to get in.

This is a 2011 ETF Review so far with only 3 months into the year. The end of the year could have many surprises so invest carefully.

The best Steel ETFs are among the 2 that are currently active in this commodity driven market. Steel is the primary source of raw materials for most industries, but its price is not always favorable to the investors.

When ETF Investing and steel is in you’re the primary focus of investment, there are only two that only deal with this raw material. They are Market Vectors Steel ETF (SLX) and PowerShares Global Steel (PSTL).

The SLX is invested in companies whose profits are directly tied to the current price fluctuations of the Steel and Iron Ore prices on the global market. It current price is at $70.63 as of March 18, 2011 which has seen a 52 week swing from $50.73 to $77.42. The average daily volume of the ETF is 285K and the expense ratio is at 0.55%.

The return from the EFT is directly tied to the price of this raw material which can be seen in its yearly returns. For 2007 the return was 84.36%, 2008 saw a -63.87%. 2009 was a rebound year with profits of 112.78% but 2010 saw a decrease to 19.65%. So far YTD for 2001 the return is only 1.63%

The PSTL is also directly tied to steel producing corporations around the world. It has a current price of $22.81. The 52 week fluctuation of this price is from $17.10 to $25.26. The average trading volume is only 5.8K and the expense ratio is 0.75%.

The annual returns of the ETF were 71.00% in 2009 with 7.43% in 2010 but the YTD is only 0.70%.

There are other ETF’s that have investments in steel around the globe but these are the only ones that have concentrated on business that deal with steel. Just remember that most of this raw material is now produced outside the US and its price will fluctuate with the global economy. The best steel ETFs are these two because there are only two available at this time.

The list of the Best Cotton ETFs is very short. There is only one and it is an ETN. The name of this investment mechanism is iPath Dow-Jones UBS Cotton TR Sub-Index ETN (BAL).

This ETN has been growing because of the demand out of China for this raw material. They are expected to need over 47 million bales of cotton this year. Their problem is twofold. Their domestic production of cotton peaks out at about 30 million bales. The second part of the equation was their other supplier of cotton, Australia.

After the flood that hit Australia earlier this year, the harvest of cotton and its crops will see a negative impact. As reported by Reuter’s news agency, 15% to 20% of the cotton crop is gone or was severely damaged by the floods. Even with this devastation over 3.7 million bales of cotton are expected to be harvested. That still leaves China with a shortfall on their needs. Australia is the 4th largest producer of this commodity in the world.

As with all things in the economy, demand and supply will determine the cost. In the last 52 weeks the price of the BAL ETN has grown from $35.64 to $$112.00. As of the close of March 4, 2011 the price was at $110.81. The bid price was at $110.50 and the asking price was at $125.03 or a spread of 12.34%.

The return for 2010 was at 96.22% and the present YTD is at 47.95. This is an investment that is moving in the right direction for now. It will not last forever, but currently is the best ETF Investing opportunity. This is the best cotton ETFs and the only one if you wish to invest in this commodity.

It seems that investing in Polish ETFs is the wisest European investment in the past year. This is because of the stability of their government and their economy. Unlike other member states of the EU, the Polish economy is thriving. This is attributed to their economy not being dependant on exportation of goods. What has surprised most is that the economy has stayed strong, even after the plane crash that took the lives of a majority of the Polish leadership in both the military and government positions.

The possibility of ETF investing in Poland is through two new ETFs. This includes the Market Vectors Poland ETF (PLND) offered by Van Eck, and the MSCI Poland Investable Market Index Fund (EPOL) offered by iShares.

The EPOL currently has an average daily trading volume of 47.5k, with a price of $34.70 at the close of January 24, 2011. The funds expense ratio is at 0.61% and the total assets are at $107.3 million. This ETF is invested in financial services at 47.6% of the fund’s assets, along with 17.8% in industrial materials and 11.4% from utilities. The top 5 assets hold 49.87% of the fund’s total investment. This is a mid growth investment that saw the third quarter profits in 2010 at 34.23%, but the YTD in 2011 is only 3.30%.

The PLND currently has an average daily trading volume of 45.2k, with a price of $28.21 at the close of January 24, 2011. The funds expense ratio is at 0.65% and the total assets are at $61.3 million. This ETF is invested in financial services at 41.3% of the fund’s assets, along with 13.9% in Energy and 10.4% from Industrial Materials. The top 5 assets hold 36.21% of the fund’s total investment. This is a mid growth investment that saw the third quarter profits in 2010 at 31.98%, but the YTD in 2011 is only 4.40%.

At the current time, these are the only two possibilities for investing in Polish ETFs.

The list of the Best Latin America ETFs is from the 16 that are available of which 2 are on the London exchange. Of these the counties that have the greatest and fastest moving economies are also the places where their associated ETF’s are doing the best. This includes Brazil, Chile and Columbia.

The one that has been leading the pack for some time now is the iShares MSCI Brazil Index Fund (EWZ). The share price as of December 15, 2010 was at $75.31. It has an average daily trading volume of 18.3 million shares. This is a single country fund that has an expense ratio of 0.65%. This ETF has been around since 2003 and its best yearly performance was in 2009 with a return of 121.50%. The third quarter returns for this year was at 21.28%.

The Global X/InterBolsa FTSE Colombia 20 ETF (GXG) is one that surprises most investors since this country is also know for illicit drugs. The investments in this ETF are in the energy and financial sectors of the country. Its share price for December 15, 2010 was at $42.16. The expense ratio is at 0.86% with an average daily trading of 61K shares. This is a new ETF introduced last year and has an YTD return of 51.19% for 2010. The third quarter results were at 30.53%.

Now onto the country that is making the most of their heroic effort to save those trapped miners. The iShares MSCI Chile Fund (ECH) is trading near its 52 week high and has a share price of $79.35 as of the close of December 15, 2010. The expense ratio of this fund is at 0.65% and the average daily trading volume is at 222K. The sectors this ETF is invested in are utilities, consumer and business services. The return for 2009 was at 86.02% with an YTD of 44.97%. The third quarter for 2010 was at 31.74%.

When thinking of ETF Investing, these three are doing better than the majority of the other types of investments in the world. The best Latin American ETF’s are a sound investment at this time for your portfolio.

This information is about the best REIT ETFs that have shown great results all year. While the rest of the economy has been slow to recover, the real estate markets, especially the large financial institutions that have investments in office buildings have been strong all year.

If you are considering an ETF Investing in this sector there are 5 to consider. The best performer of the year so far is iShares Cohen & Steers Realty Majors (ICF) with an YTD of 26.26%. The second leading performer is Vanguard REIT Index ETF (VNQ) with an YTD of 25.46%. The third is SPDR Dow Jones REIT (RWR) that has an YTD return of 24.96%. Running fourth is the iShares FTSE EPRA/NAREIT North American (IFNA) with an YTD return of 24.06%. The last is iShares Dow Jones US Real Estate (IYR) that has pulled in an YTD of 23.84%.

Each of these is performing great this year and each one did 25% to 40% returns for last year, but be wary for long term investment. Each one of these ETF’s lost 37% or greater in 2008.

If you decide to invest in a REIT ETF, the average trading volume is a big indicator how active it is. The larger it is the more active it is along with greater risk. The IYR is the most heavily traded ETF with an average trading volume of 14.6 million. The second most active is the VNQ with 2.7 million. The final three fall in with the ICF at 960K, RWR with 405K and IFNA with 3K.

These are the best REIT ETFs 2010 so far. What makes them a solid short term investment is that this is where the large financial players place their money and the Simon Property Group Inc is the largest investment for each of these ETF’s.
