The current choices for India ETF investing are limited to 6 different ones from 5 different investment companies. There is the iPath MSCI India Index ETN (INP), WisdomTree India Earnings (EPI), PowerShares India (PIN), iShares S&P India Nifty 50 Index (INDY), Direxion Daily India Bull 2X (INDL), and the Direxion Daily India Bear 2X (INDZ).
For those investors looking at India as a possible place for profit with their ETF Investing, here are some facts. India is the most populous country in the world. They also have the 12th largest economy in the world which is continuing to grow. To emphasize this, their economy grew by 8% in the last quarter of 2009.
Nearly half of India’ gross national product is produced by the service industry. The other half is made up of agriculture and industry. The largest private sector company in the nation is the conglomerate named Reliance Industries. In 2009, it was the 264th largest company in the world with $3.6 billion in profits for the fiscal year ending in March of 2010.
This is the company that is the major player in this economy. With the INP, it is the largest asset at 12.97%. With EPI, it is 10.56% of the total assets. With the PIN, it is 10.12% of the ETFs assets. The INDY has 11.80% of its assets with Reliance Industries.
Direxion Daily India Bull 2X (INDL) and the Direxion Daily India Bear 2X (INDZ) invest a little differently. Half of the investment in the INDL is in the PIN ETF and the remainder in a Goldman Sachs Government fund. The INDZ is similar but the shares of PIN are negative shares which only make money if there is a decline.
When looking at India ETF investing, it is best to keep a close eye on Reliance Industries and how it is performing. This company is so large it will affect all of the ETF’s share prices, and the economy of India as a whole.
