At the present time, there are two Solar Energy ETF investing opportunities available for investors. There is the Claymore Mac Global Solar Energy (TAN), and the Vectors Solar Energy ETF (KWT). With many thinking that this renewable energy source as the wave of the future, not all investors are willing to venture into this sector of the market.
The biggest worry came back in February of this year when the chairman of First Solar dumped 40% or 1.3 million shares of his company’s stock onto the market. While the company’s stock price did recover from this, the prices of TAN and KWT have yet to. TAN has 11.49% of their assets in this company while KWT is at 12.76% of their assets in this company.
Both of these ETFs have even more similarities. They are both heavily invested in foreign companies with TAN at 70.7% of their assets overseas and KWT at 69.4%. The main difference in the investments of these two ETFs is the percentages of the companies they hold a stake in because both have literally the same holdings.
When it comes to performance, TAN has an edge with a return in 2009 of 16.88%. However, the YTD is presently at negative 35.71%. The performance of KWY for 2009 was at 10.14 with a YTD at a negative 36.49%.
The average trading volume for TAN is at 470K while for KWT it is at 30K. The expense ratio of both is at 0.65%. The assets of TAN are at $131 million with a price of $6.59 as of June 2, 2010. For KWT, the assets are lower at $23 million, but the price per share is higher at $9.85.
Both of these ETFs are in the volatile energy sector for ETF investing which has a high level of risk. Because of this, Solar Energy ETF investing will remain risky until investors and speculators finally get through their thick heads that this is the future, and oil will be a thing of the past very soon.
